Pool Repair Decision Tree

Use this matrix to evaluate scope, cost, and urgency before authorizing repairs. Blue Fox technicians rely on the same logic when advising homeowners.

Step 1: Classify the Issue

Critical

  • No water circulation (pump failure, breaker trip)
  • Heater error during freeze protection
  • Leaks causing rapid water loss or electrical hazard

High Priority

  • Salt system not producing but manual chlorination possible
  • Automation offline reducing convenience but not safety
  • Filter PSI climbing despite cleaning

Planned

  • Cosmetic upgrades (LED lighting, sheers)
  • Efficiency improvements (VS pump swap)
  • Preventative replacements (aging valves)

Step 2: Evaluate Equipment Age & Warranty

Equipment TypeTypical LifespanWarranty WindowGuidance
Variable-Speed Pump8 – 12 years3 – 4 years manufacturerIf over 7 years and major failure, consider replacement for efficiency gains.
Single-Speed Pump5 – 7 years1 yearUpgrade to VS when motor fails or seal leaks repeatedly.
Salt Cell3 – 5 years1 – 3 yearsReplace when production drops or voltage diagnostics fail.
Heater (Gas/Electric)7 – 12 years2 – 3 yearsIf heat exchanger compromised or repairs exceed 50% of replacement, upgrade.
Automation Controller10+ years1 yearEvaluate based on technology compatibility and relay availability.
Filters (Cartridge/DE/Sand)7 – 10 years shell life1 yearRebuild internals as needed; replace housing if cracked or corroded.

Step 3: Decide Repair vs. Replace

Repair If…

  • Equipment is within first half of expected life.
  • Parts are readily available and cost less than 30% of full replacement.
  • Downtime can be limited to 24 hours and safety systems remain active.
  • The failure is isolated (e.g., pump seal, relay, flow switch).

Replace If…

  • Multiple components have failed within 12 months.
  • Upgrading unlocks efficiency savings or automation you want.
  • Warranty coverage requires OEM install or proof of replacement.
  • Repairs exceed 50% of replacement cost or require scarce parts.

Step 4: Budget & Schedule

For critical failures, authorize repair/replacement immediately to protect water quality and avoid downstream damage. For planned upgrades, align scheduling with other projects (decking, landscape, automation). Always request detailed scope, parts list, and warranty terms in writing.
